Sharpening the Edge

Experts from Aristotle to Twyla Tharp agree on the importance of regular habits to the creative life.  On my last plein air outing, after an absence of about six weeks, I realized that I had lost my edge.  In conversations with several other plein air painters, I discovered that they had also had this experience.

It really does take regular practice to be able to produce good work under demanding conditions. There are several new landscapes I want to start to paint from this year’s sketches, and that will be difficult enough without my brush being rusty.

I created this still life as a way of easing back into my painting routine, and to capture a last bit of autumn colour before winter.  By thinking of it as an exercise, I was able to take the pressure off and just enjoy the experience.
