Cross_Subasio  130St Francis’ feast today – and we enter a weekend that includes our St Francis feast retreat. Having been to Assisi, birthplace and heartbeat of Francis and his way, I can never return without physically experiencing the challenge of ascent and descent, the journey into the presence of God and the return to the noise and chaos of our everyday life.

In climbing to the top of Mount Subasio, passing en route the Carceri, or cells, which Francis and his friars carved into the rock for space to be alone in the silence that is the presence of the divine, the physical effort is experienced throughout my whole body. Now, I am not fit and, apart from many a long daily walk with my dog, seldom exercise vigorously. Even my walks are along the flat south coast seawall with no undulations in sight.
